John Cox (1860-1951), Quaker genealogist, lived in or near New York City for most of his life. He was an architect, engineer, and poet, but his primary interests were religious tolerance and genealogy. As Custodian of Records for the New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, he worked to collect surviving records from both Orthodox and Hicksite meetings. Shrewsbury Monthly Meeting was established in 1672 along with Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury and Rahway) Quarterly Meeting. The monthly meeting was transferred to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1682. Two branches were formed at the time of the Separation. The Orthodox monthly meeting was discontinued in 1855; its members were transferred to Rahway and Plainfield Monthly Meeting (Orthodox).
